Groveton Recognized For 400th Participation
The Grovetown community and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church were honored for their work in commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Commonwealth.

By Chuck Hagee, GazetteWednesday, June 18, 2008

Groveton Community and St. Mark's Episcopal Church were recognized Monday night for their participation in the Virginia 2007 Community Program commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Commonwealth with the founding of Jamestown.

Lee District Supervisor Jeffrey McKay presented proclamations from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to Annabel Baer, chair, Groveton Civic Association and The Reverend John A. Weatherly, pastor, St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He also presented a State proclamation, signed by Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine, to Richard Pollio, principal, Groveton Elementary School.

Noting that Groveton Civic Association is the oldest such organization in Fairfax County, McKay told the group assembled in the lobby of Groveton Elementary School,'For me this is a special treat tonight. It's not often that I get to come to my own neighborhood to present a special recognition. Despite all that is happening around us our neighborhood continues to survive and prosper.'

In addition to receiving the recognition proclamations attendees were able to view several displays depicting Groveton's community history. 'It is particularly fitting that this event is taking place in an elementary school because that is the time when children need to be introduced to history. And, not just what they read in their text books but what actually took place where they live,' McKay said.

Also present for the event were Dr. Jack Dale, superintendent, Fairfax County Public Schools; Don Hakenson, author of 'This Forgotten Land' and Patrick O'Neill, author of 'Images of Mount Vernon,' both representing the Franconia Museum; Spring Bank and Gum Springs community representatives; and representatives of Groveton Baptist Church.
