Worship Ministries

Worship leaders assist the Rector in areas such as planning worship and special events, recruiting leaders and volunteers for Worship program activities, and conducting training.

This is an area where our members can use their gifts and talents to serve the Lord and help with activities such as:

Acolytes - Acolytes are lay volunteers age 8 through adult, who are trained to assist the clergy during services. They carry the cross and torches and lead the procession at the beginning and end of services.

Altar Guild - The Altar Guild members prepare and maintain altar linens, hangings, vessels and the clergy's vestments before each service, particularly the Altar area. The altar guild also assists with preparations for weddings, funerals and other special liturgies.

Choir - Make a joyful noise unto the Lord! Join St. Mark's choir! Trained and untrained voices are welcome. The Choir sings during the 10:00 a.m. service on Sundays, September through June. If you are interested, please leave a message for Music Director/Organist, Tatiana Andronikova, with the church administrator, Emily Cole, if you'd like to join the choir, 703-765-3949.

Flower Guild - The flower guild provides altar flowers as well as other floral decorations in the church. Please contact the church office if you'd like to join the flower guild or make a donation towards the purchase of flower in memory/honor/ thanksgiving of someone.

Greeters - Our Gracious Greeters welcome visitors and members of St. Mark's at the 10 a.m.. service each Sunday, and provide assistance and direction to visitors and newcomers.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEM) - A LEM is a lay parishioner licensed by the bishop to share the consecrated elements with members of the congregation, those unable to be present in church trained lay parishioners licensed by the diocese to serve as chalice bearers during the Holy Eucharist.  Please see the rector if you are interested in this ministry and the LEM step-by-step instructions for what is involved.

Lay Readers/Lectors - Lay readers are given training as to the reading of the Old and New Testament. They may be called upon to assist the Rector during special services in addition to regular services. Lay Readers lead corporate worship (Morning Prayer), in the absence of a Clergy Person. Lectors read the lessons and psalms.

Pastoral Care - Assist parishioners in dealing with emergencies and problems, by preparing meals that serve 2-4 people which can be frozen. These meals can be casseroles or soup with ingredients listed, date prepared and how to heat the frozen dish. More information is found at this link.. A prayer request book is located on the credenza in the Narthex.

Sacred Arts - The Sacred Arts Committee is responsible for commissioning artists and choosing works of art to be admitted into the church.  The committee selected designs and materials for banners to hang on the walls on the left and right of the stained glass window behind the altar.

Social Saints - The Social Saints host fund-raising dinners which provide a great opportunity for people to enjoy a delicious meal and fellowship. Money raised supports numerous parish needs and programs. Please see our events page for upcoming dinners or the Fellowship ministry link.

Tellers - Our tellers count and record attendance and offerings after the 10:00 A.M. service. Teller Procedures.

Ushers - This important ministry greets people as they enter the church, hand out service bulletins, assist with collecting offerings during services, and help direct visitors to Sunday School and other areas. Please contact the church office if you'd like to serve.
