Welcome Military Members and Families

The St. Mark’s congregation and clergy are committed to supporting our nation’s military and their families. We appreciate your unwavering dedication and sacrifices, and would love to be your church home while you are assigned to the Washington, DC area. We understand how difficult it is for children and teens to come into new environments, so we strive to offer activities that are comfortable yet fun and engaging.

Not only are many of our members active military or retired veterans, some of our rectors have served in the military. To give you an idea of our church leadership, our current rector, The Reverend John A. Weatherly, retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps and as a Joint Force Command Chaplain for the Virginia National Guard (see his resume for more information). Our Priest Associate, The Reverend Donna Foughty, experienced the rewards and challenges of military life for 24 years as the spouse of a U.S. Air Force Officer. An Army chaplain served our parish from 1959-1961 and a Naval Reserve Corps chaplain served from 1989 to 1995.

Since 2014, our clergy have provided Holy Eucharist services and Bible studies to retired officers and their spouses from the U.S. Uniformed Services, retirees from the CIA, FBI, Foreign Service and other Federal Agencies, and the parents of active and retired military personnel and civilians at The Fairfax, A Sunrise Senior Living Community, near Fort Belvoir, VA. The service is open to all residents. Our attendance varies but is usually between 6 and 12, except for Ash Wednesday and Thanksgiving, when up to 20 might attend.

Once a month, our rectors provide a service of Holy Eucharist at the Pentagon.  The service takes place in the Pentagon Chapel, Room 1E438 in the west wing, near the 9/11 Memorial.

Each Sunday during our Holy Eucharist service, the Prayers of the People include prayers specifically for service members. If you would like to add a service member’s name to our prayer list, please contact our church office or add their name to the prayer list binder in our church narthex.  We will be honored to pray for them.

We hope you will join our church family.
