The Rev. Churchill J. Gibson, Jr., 19312008

Churchill J. Gibson, Jr.Churchill J. Gibson Jr. was a priest associate at St. Mark's for many years until his death on April 9, 2008. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1957 and served as an associate rector and chaplain in the Northern Virginia area for more than 50 years. He was the chaplain and associate dean of students at Virginia Theological Seminary from 1977 to 1995.

Rev. Gibson also served as chaplain at the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration at Shrine Mont in Orkney Springs, VA, for 20 years. Shrine Mont was founded by his aunt and uncle in 1925. It is a conference center and retreat for families and individuals to celebrate being part of the family of God and to enjoy rest, prayer, fellowship, and learning.  The Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration is an open-air cathedral.  Each of its stones was pulled by horse or rolled by local people from the mountain that embraces it.  (For more information see the Shrine Mont website  and information on St. Mark’s annual weekend at Shrine Mont.) On July 15, 2012, a marker with the text of the “Shouting Prayer” was dedicated in memory of Rev. Churchill Gibson, Jr.,Gibson Family at marker dedication with many of his family attending the ceremony.
